Week6, Game 2. Tim kindly broke his Neverborn (who've completed their own week 6 games) so that I could catch up.

You'll find a report on the SELWG forum on the Malifaux pages.

Roll on week 7!

Campaign News / Missing In Action
« Last post by Chris R on November 30, 2016, 12:09:14 pm »
I've just noticed that I have mislaid my small version of the Malifaux rules and a bag of smoke-coloured activation markers.

Thinking back I'm pretty sure I didn't use either of them for my last 2 games. That implies that I last had them some time ago - around the time I played Paul Keyes and Luke at the club.

So has anyone come across them please?

Thanks
Chris
PS And yes I have checked my toy cupboard!

Campaign News / Dreamer vs Leviticus the rematch
« Last post by Tim on November 28, 2016, 06:33:45 am »
On Friday night Mike and I played the rematch of our week 5 game with the Dreamer (this time with the ability to summon new nightmares) taking on Mike's Outcast crew led by Leviticus. To make the game even more interesting we ended up playing exactly the same story encounter as we did last time, except with me as the attacker (needing to take a (2) interact action on a designated piece of scenery in the enemy half of the table to claim 3 strategy VP) and Mike as defender needing to kill all my masters and henchmen to get his VP.

The board was set out with the obelisk that forms the week 6 wild card in the center and four building pretty much evenly spaced around it as you head toward each corner. A few trees and fences / hedges completed the board.  I deployed all my crew between the two buildings in my deployment zone, and Mike set up a bit more spread out but largely on the same side of the table as me. I'm not going to pretend that I remeber everything as it happened, or that when I say "such and such happened on turn 3" that it wasn't actually turn 4, but the following gives a general impression of the battle:

Turn 1
I moved my crew between the two buildings toward the center of the table, ensuring I remained outside the 6" reach of the obelisk (the lack of a finished off flip scaring me in the face of Mike, who last time we played killed nearly every model I had).  Mike did likewise, with the added bonus that he shot one of my daydreams with his sniper.  My Dreamer was able to summon an insidious madness or two, who promptly scuttled off toward the building I needed to interact with to claim the VP.

Turn 2
Mike managed to kill on of my insidious madness with his mechanical rider, but I was able to summon more to replace them, as well as summoning a stitched together.  This caused my Dreamer to briefly turn into Lord Chompy Bits, in a blink-or-you-miss it move that saw Chompy leave as soon as he arrived, bringing the Dreamer back with waking zero and the ability to heal back to full power.  I definitely had the worst turn of the two of us, as my Waldgeist moved to engage Leviticus but was promptly wounded quite badly. Teddy was pushed by Baby Kade toward the Hooded rider in an attempt to take him out before his armour and attacks built too high, but before he could get his charge off Rusty Alice got three shots off using quick fire, the last one needing to do high damage on a double negative flip to finish me off. Alas, Red Joker! First wound to Teddy in 12 games, as he was within 6" of the center, so now he must discard a card to take (0) actions. Damnation!

Turn 3
I can't recall much happening this turn, except for my insidious madnesses heading toward their objective and at least one being engaged by Mike's troops so they couldn't take interact actions.  The hooded rider ended up engaging with Baby Kade, Stitched Together and the Doppleganger, all of whom chipped away one wound at a time thanks to the rider's Armour +3.  The Widow Weaver attempted to poison and paralyse the hooded rider using her "seize prey" move, but a -ve flip on casting actions saw her fail; twice.  The Dreamer took some damage but was able to shift the vast majority onto the Stitched Together and Widow Weaver, and alas, the Waldgeist met his untimely, if not inevitable, end.

Turn 4
I can't recall who died to enable this to happen but Leviticus managed to kill one of my models and manifest into his avatar, giving him 4 actions that turn. If memory serves, he was able to see off the stitched together as a result, a bit of a blow as the high damage of 7 was what I needed to get rid of the hooded rider.  I am pretty sure that at this point, Baby Kade finally succumbed to the hooded rider's attentions (or was it Leviticus?) but no injury was suffered.  Both my insidious madness reached their objectives, dropping scheme markers against scenery in the enemy table half to secure scheme victory points for plant evidence.  The Dreamer summoned Lelu, Lilitu and a further insidious madness, leaving him on waking +3.  Knowing that to gain any VP from his strategy Mike needed to kill the dreamer, i decided not to reduce this and take the hit in terms of my ability to heal recently summoned models. Lelu and Lilitu engaged the Hooded Rider, whilst the insidious madness moved out toward more scenery to plan evidence.

Turn 5
Starting at about 10.25 this was a bit of a rapid turn. My insidious madness dropped a (2) marker to claim the objective and gain 3 VP, only for Mike to use his mechanical rider's tricks to get him in base contact with the marker and use his own (2) interact action to remove it.  The Dreamer summoned a daydream, turning into Chompy again, this time for good to make sure Mike couldn't finish off both the Widow Weaver and Dreamer in taht turn (he would have had to knock 7 wounds off Chompy followed by 6 incrporeal wounds from the Dreamer to do so).  My most recently summoned madness dropped a final scheme in Mike's half to claim a further VP.

End Result
A hard fought 3-0 victory to me, following a highly enjoyable and stressful game in which I did not kill a single one of Mike's models (apart from a few 4SS ones that he summoned to the table).  Possibly the first time I have ever played tactically and not just rushed forward gung ho, and it paid off!

At this point, my pride forces me to mention that before this game Mike had won 14 on the trot. Woop woop. No doubt he will post a more accurate, and enjoyable version of this battle report. If I have made any glaring errors, I can only apologise. It is Monday morning after all!

Not sure if this will change anyone's mind but characters created in Through the Breach can be used in standard Malifaux games.

The view from the otehr side:
CHASE THE LADY

Leveticus smiled as he watched his crew from Captivating Salvage and Logistics gather together the last elements needed to grant him the powers to see of this “Dreamer” thing once and for all.  Half of them were already packed up and ready to go while the rest shouldn’t take long.  The strange energy given off by the rather large monument was slightly disquieting, but the day looked like a good one nonetheless.

His reverie was rudely interrupted by the barking of dogs.  Turning to look he saw a pair of Guild hounds bounding towards the small coffin and the strange fetish of bones and feathers that were the remaining elements.  Leveticus was sure that there must be some handlers for the dogs somewhere and scanning the far side of the hamlet he spotted Perdita Ortega slipping forwards, accompanied by at least one of her brothers and a couple of other shadowy figures.

“Damn it!” he muttered.  The Guild must have heard about the powers these totems could provide against the Neverborn.  Of course Perdita would rush to seize anything she could use in her war against the Neverborn.  Leveticus waved Ashes and Dust forwards to grab the coffin, followed by a small Abomination that always seemed to be hanging around.  Leveticus decided then and there that the thing was developing too much of a “fondness” for Ashes and Dust that it just wasn’t natural.  Perhaps it was time to retire it?

Jayanne started to move towards the bone and feather fetish while Alyce, as ever keen for the fray, dashed to take cover behind a wall.  And, with strangely spectral hoof beats, the Hooded Rider who had come to offer his fealty only a few days before rode out of the shadows and towards the Guild interlopers.

Leveticus smiled as he strode forwards, reached out his hand and pulled at the makings of the hounds.  His smile faded as the huge form of the ram headed Brutal Emissary stomped up behind the hounds.  This might be harder than he had expected.

To his left a flurry of shots rang out.  He sensed rather than saw Perdita’s shots smashing into the Hooded Rider.  He suddenly realised that she was accompanied by the Judge, allowing her to speed across the street towards his crew.  Leveticus knew he couldn’t let this carry on, so he ran towards the hounds.  He stretched out his hand at the snapping creature and warped its essence.  He smiled as he saw another Abomination take form before him.  As he turned to deal with the other dog a sense of power washed over him and when he opened his eyes he was back atop his unloving steed.  He struck down at the yapping dog, it whined and fell back, still growling at him.

Ashes and Dust swept up the small coffin, intending to take it safely away from the Guild interlopers,  in response the the large Emissary stomped forward swung at Ashes and Dust.  The Abomination made a strange sound and charged the Emissary, ineffectually trying to batter it.  Ashes and Dust joined the fray, taking chunks out of the Emissary.  Meanwhile over to Leveticus left Franciso gunned down the Hooded Rider, despite Jayanne’s attempts to heal him the rider faded away into smoke.  The Judge continued to run towards the fetish as Perdita with her modified pistols blazed away at Leveticus.  Once more Leveticus felt death overtake him before he returned, drawn back to life by one of his waifs.  Unfortunately he found himself directly in front of Francisco.  “Madre dios!” the surprised Ortega shouted as he set about Leveticus with his sword.  “Here we go again!” though Leveticus as once more he died and once more he found his way back to lie thanks to his waif.

Upon his return he found that the battle still hung in the balance.  Alyce had killed the Death Marshal, another Abomination arising in his place.  The rider had returned, struck at the Brutal Effigy following Perdita but had then be dispersed once again by the Guild leader.  And the Emissary continued to trade blows with Ashes and Dust, the little Abomination being smashed by a back swing.

Leveticus felt a righteous indignation fill up inside him.  Who were these Guild lackeys to get in the way of his efforts to drive the Dreamer from Malifaux?  He charged towards Francisco, crushing him beneath the hooves of his stead and raising up yet another Abomination.

Perdita screamed in anger at the sight.  Momentarily distracted by the cry Ashes and Dust was too slow to stop Emissary from striking down the Dust Storm, leaving the Ashen Core next to the small coffin.  A new Dust Storm blew in from the wastes, but Perdita gunned it down before it could reach the Core to recombine.

The light was failing, but there was still enough to see the Abominations swarm over the Effigy and for the Judge to grab the fetish and run.  The Emissary was also very battered, and Perdita had evidently decided enough was enough.  She and her battered crew slipped away into the darkness.  Leveticus was too tired to try to stop her and, anyway, he was sure he still had enough components to sort out the Dreamer.  With a weary shrug he turned away from the fleeing Guild lackeys, he had a Dust Storm to find and a Dreamer to banish…

Our hero will return in “A dream to some, a Nytmare to others!”

Campaign News / Hunt The Thimble (Week 5 Game 2)
« Last post by Chris R on November 19, 2016, 10:58:40 am »
The brave boys of Order - the Guild- marched out to face an Outcasts horde led by Mike 'The Undying One' Watkins. Their unenviable task was to try and locate a treasure (The Story was Search). There were 4 marked points on the map and a box in each, but three contained worthless nothings whilst the 4th held The Great Secret. The Guard didn't know which was which, but the Outcasts did.

As they reached the site the Guard spotted their adversary - Leveticus accompanied by trusty Rusty Alyce, Ashes+Dust, a Hooded Rider, a Librarian, 2 Waifs and an Abomination.

Perdita sent the Death Marshall (who was being Framed for Murder) to run along the right flank to distract Alyce. The Brutal Emissary and the 2 Hounds advanced up the left whilst she led Francisco, The Judge and the Effigy up the centre.

Initially little happened other than Perdita putting a good number of wounds on the Hooded Rider. But then Levi charged in and killed a Hound. Immediately the figure transmogrified into an Avatar on horseback; from here on The Hooded Rider would not die if Levi was on the board he would just be buried, recover a wound and reappear later. Worse still, and much to the Emissary's disgust, it appears that you can't bury Ashes+Dust. The Guard appeared to be fighting a near immortal force.

Still the Guard stuck to their task. The Emissary engaged Ashes+Dust who had taken one of the treasures and was in turn counter-charged by the Abomination. He killed the latter but the struggle with the ultimate fighting machine/being/mirage? was going to be tight. Oddly the death of the Abomination caused jubilation amongst the Outcasts (he'd been Framed too!).  Francisco killed the Horseman, but he was bound to return. The Judge drove towards one of the other treasure markers.

The Hooded Rider reappeared but Francisco took down Levi and then Perdita killed the Rider. This time there'd be no Arnie moment for him!  Meanwhile Alyce killed the Death Marshall - sucker!

Levi reappeared yet again and rode down Francisco. Once more Perdita shot him down.

The Judge captured a treasure and headed back to the deployment zone with it. The Emissarry was down to his last wound but finished off Ashes+ Dust which responded by reappearing immediately as two separate parts and still held the treasure! Perdita stepped forward and blew the Dust cloud away but it was too late. Night closed in and the Guild forces retreated from the field. The Judge's box held nothing of value. The mission had failed.

Overall an interesting and challenging game which the Guild lost 5-3. Trying to get to grips with all of the myriad tricks of Mike's crew made this a technical game, but the set-up was very hard for the Guild. The Guild lacks fast models and Mike had placed two of the 4 markers on his table edge. In addition he knew which marker he really needed to defend - it was the one that Ashes+Dust nabbed early on. Had I read the scenario rules more carefully I would have realised I just needed to capture the markers, I didn't need to take them back to my deployment zone. So I could have thrown The Judge in to help the Emissary which might have given me another marker. However I wasn't to know that that was the vital one, and the other two were way out of reach. Moreover Levi is a real killer and not being able to keep him off table is frustrating. If you kill him he's treated as buried and reappears at the start of the turn. If you bury him the same thing happens!

I'm now looking forward to my week 6 games against Tim and Ben.

Regards
C
